Mindfulness Meditation For Anxiety

Depression is a serious mental health condition that extends far beyond ordinary sadness. It is a persistent state of low mood, emptiness, and loss of interest in life. The world feels heavy, colourless, and exhausting. As author Andrew Solomon wrote, “The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality.” This captures how depression drains the very energy to live.

Depression affects thoughts, emotions, and physical health. Common symptoms include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, and feelings of worthlessness. It is not a sign of weakness or a character flaw. It is a medical condition involving brain chemistry, genetics, and life circumstances. As Solomon further explained, “I felt a kind of tenderness for my depressed self… a recognition that my depression had been a form of hibernation, a gathering of resources for a new beginning.”

What makes depression complex is how it isolates. Those suffering often feel alone and misunderstood. Another key point is that it distorts thinking, making hopelessness feel permanent and true. Yet recovery is possible. Therapy, medication, support, and time can restore light. As actor Dwayne Johnson shared about his own depression, “We all go through the sludge. And depression never discriminates. The key is to have the courage to reach out and talk to someone.”

Depression is a painful condition, but it does not define who you are. Healing takes time and help, and that is okay. As Solomon concluded, “The sunken place is not the only place. There is also the place of rising.”
