Anticipatory Anxiety

Self-doubt is the voice inside that questions your abilities and worth. Worry is the mind’s tendency to imagine worst-case scenarios. Together, they form a powerful team that fuels overthinking and steals peace. As philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions.” This reminds us that small doubts can grow into big problems if left unchecked.

Self-doubt makes you question every decision. Did I do that right? Am I good enough? Worry takes these questions and runs into the future. What if I fail? What if they judge me? Both keep you stuck in your head instead of taking action. As writer Marianne Williamson observed, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” This means self-doubt often hides our true potential.

What makes this pair interesting is how they feed each other. Self-doubt creates worry. Worry strengthens self-doubt. It becomes a loop that is hard to break. Another key point is that everyone experiences them. Even successful people feel doubt. The difference is that they act anyway. As basketball legend Michael Jordan said, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. I have failed over and over again. And that is why I succeed.” His words show that doubt and worry do not have to stop you.

Self-doubt and worry are normal, but they do not own you. Acknowledge them, then move forward anyway. As Eleanor Roosevelt wisely said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.”
