Psychologist Edward L. Deci, co-developer of Self-Determination Theory, explained that intrinsic motivation—motivation driven by internal satisfaction—is more powerful and long-lasting than external pressure. A self-focused approach strengthens intrinsic motivation by aligning actions with personal interests and values.

Developing self-focused motivation involves practices such as clarifying personal purpose, setting self-directed goals, tracking individual progress, reflective journaling, and celebrating small wins. Building self-efficacy, a concept introduced by Albert Bandura, also enhances motivation. When individuals recognise their ability to succeed through consistent effort, their internal drive increases.
