Yoga for Detox & Cleansing

Yoga for detox and cleansing is a holistic practice that supports the body’s natural elimination systems through specific postures, breathwork, and purification techniques. The body already has its own detoxification systems—the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and lymphatic system—but modern lifestyles can burden these organs. Yoga enhances their function by improving circulation, stimulating internal organs, and promoting lymphatic flow. A 12-week study found that people who practiced yoga for 30 minutes daily had significantly lower liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST) compared with control groups.

Traditional yogic cleansing practices, known as Shatkarma or Shatkriyas, include six purification techniques: Neti (nasal cleansing), Dhauti (digestive tract cleansing), Basti (yogic enema), Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath), Trataka (focused gazing), and Nauli (abdominal massaging). These practices aim to balance the three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), remove toxins, and prepare the body for higher yogic practices. A review of 12 studies found that Laghu Shankhaprakshalana (short yogic bowel cleansing) benefits digestive issues such as constipation and IBS, supports weight management, and poses no risk of electrolyte imbalance in healthy individuals.

Key Poses for Detox and Cleansing

  • Legs-Up-the-Wall (Viparita Karani) : Gentle inversion that uses gravity to drain lymph fluid from the legs, encouraging circulation through the lymphatic system
  • Seated Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana) : Massages the liver, kidneys, and abdominal organs; stimulates digestion and enhances blood flow to these organs
  • Revolved Chair Pose (Parivrtta Utkatasana) : Deep twisting pose that stimulates the liver and kidneys while enhancing digestion
  • Reclined Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana) : Gently massages abdominal organs, aiding digestion and waste removal
  • Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) : Rhythmic flow that stimulates circulation and encourages lymphatic movement, especially around the neck and underarms, where lymph nodes reside
  • Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) : Inversion that encourages lymphatic drainage from the lower extremities while improving circulation
  • Kapalabhati Pranayama (Skull-Shining Breath) : Purifies frontal air sinuses, flushes out stale residual air from lungs, and cleanses nasal passages

How to Practice Safely

  • Practice in the morning on an empty stomach for the best results
  • Aim for 20-30 minutes, 3-5 times weekly
  • Stay hydrated before and after practice to support detoxification
  • Move slowly and never force a pose—listen to your body
  • Consult a healthcare provider before beginning, especially if one has medical conditions or are pregnant

Yoga offers an accessible, holistic approach to supporting the body’s natural detoxification systems—working through improved circulation, lymphatic flow, and organ stimulation rather than trendy cleanses or restrictive diets. With consistent practice, you can enhance digestion, boost energy levels, and support your body’s innate ability to cleanse itself from the inside out.
