Empathy in teaching is the practice of understanding and responding to students’ emotional and academic needs from their perspective. It moves beyond delivering content to connecting with learners as whole human beings. As Paulo Freire wrote, “Education changes people. People change the world.”
Empathetic teachers recognise that learning is shaped by emotions. A struggling student may also be dealing with anxiety or family stress. Empathy allows teachers to see beyond behaviour to the human beneath. As Dr Brené Brown explains, “Teachers who create empathy don’t teach content; they teach children. Children learn better when they feel valued.”
Students who feel understood show greater engagement and achievement. Empathy also bridges gaps created by trauma or poverty. It meets students where they are. As Rita Pierson said, “Every child deserves a champion—an adult who understands the power of connection.”
Empathy in teaching transforms classrooms. It sees the learner, not just the learning. As Freire concluded, “To teach is not to transfer knowledge but to create possibilities.”
