Empathy Development Techniques

Empathy development techniques help you learn to understand and share other people’s feelings. Research shows empathy is not something you’re born with—you can build it through practice.

Techniques to try

  • Active listening: When someone talks, really listen. Repeat back what you heard in your own words. Don’t judge. Just try to understand how they feel.
  • Put yourself in their shoes: Ask yourself, “How would I want someone to talk to me right now?” or “What advice would I want to hear?” Visual perspective tasks (imagining what someone else sees) also help.
  • Practice with games: Some apps use short stories to teach empathy. You read a situation and choose the caring response. Doing this repeatedly helps build the habit.
  • Learn from rewards: A study found that when people got a reward for someone else’s happiness, they started to care more about that person—even after the rewards stopped. Your brain can learn to enjoy caring for others.
  • Join a training program: Groups like the Bonner Foundation offer simple empathy exercises that use pictures, group discussions, and active listening practice.
  • Stay motivated: The Mayo Clinic says motivation is key. If you want to connect with people or become a more caring person, you can do so. Focus on what you have in common with others—it makes empathy easier.

The bottom line: Studies show that focusing on your relationship with the other person works best. With regular practice, you can get better at understanding people, caring about them, and helping when needed. Empathy is a skill anyone can learn.
