Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

Herbal remedies for anxiety are natural plant-based products used to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, stress, and nervous tension. With growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine, many people turn to these options, seeking fewer side effects than conventional pharmaceuticals. However, the FDA does not monitor herbal supplements the same way it monitors medicines, meaning quality can vary, and “natural” does not always mean safe. A 2024 scoping review found that research has focused primarily on kava, lavender, saffron, probiotics, and valerian.

Several herbs show promise based on clinical studies. Such as,

  • Lavender, particularly the oral formulation Silexan, has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing anxiety symptoms with minimal side effects like gastrointestinal distress. A narrative review confirmed lavender improves both anxiety and depression.
  • Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, was shown in one study to reduce anxiety scores by 44% over eight weeks by lowering cortisol levels.
  • Passion flower increases GABA in the brain, promoting relaxation, though it may cause sleepiness.
  • Valerian root blocks GABA degradation and is often used for insomnia-related anxiety, but studies show mixed results on its effectiveness.

What makes herbal remedies particularly compelling is the emerging research on specific compounds. A 2025 randomised controlled trial of Rosa damascena (Damask rose) in menopausal women found anxiety scores decreased from 14.6 ± 8.3 to 6.2 ± 4.8 over eight weeks, with no adverse effects reported. Chamomile has limited data suggesting short-term use is safe and effective for anxiety symptoms, though it may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to promote calm, but researchers are still exploring its long-term effects. Lemon balm strengthens GABA and acetylcholine functions, improving mood and mental clarity.

Herbal remedies offer promising options for anxiety management with generally favourable side effect profiles, yet they require caution—consulting a healthcare provider is essential to understand potential interactions with medications, appropriate dosing, and individual safety considerations, as these supplements can cause side effects ranging from drowsiness to, in rare cases like kava, serious liver damage .
