The best herbal remedies for anxiety have strong clinical evidence supporting their efficacy. Lavender (Silexan) and Ashwagandha are the most researched botanicals, showing effects comparable to standard medications in large-scale trials. Unlike conventional anxiolytics, these herbs are generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects.
Lavender (Silexan) is the best-studied herbal anxiolytic. A phase III trial of 498 patients found Silexan 80 mg daily over 8 weeks to be significantly superior to placebo (p<0.01), reducing MADRS scores by 12.1 points vs 9.95 for placebo. Response rates were 53.5% for Silexan, comparable to sertraline 50 mg (54.0%), while the placebo achieved only 41.5%. Silexan is non-sedating, lacks addiction potential, and causes only mild gastrointestinal symptoms (burping, breath odour).
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogen that normalises physiological processes under stress. A 2025 randomised trial of 90 participants found that Zenrootâ„¢ (125 mg daily for 84 days) significantly improved Beck Anxiety Inventory scores on days 28, 56, and 84 (p<0.05), as well as Perceived Stress Scale and sleep quality. KSM-66 Ashwagandha demonstrated a 29% reduction in perceived stress scores and nearly 19% reduction in serum cortisol levels in a multi-continent study of 1,002 participants.
Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) shows promising results for Generalised Anxiety Disorder. A 2025 meta-analysis of 92 RCTs found CHM to be more effective than anxiolytic medication (HAMA Mean Difference = -1.50 points, p<0.001) and to be associated with significantly fewer adverse events (Incidence Rate Ratio = 0.33, p<0.001). Herbal combinations offer synergistic benefits. A fixed combination of valerian, passion flower, lemon balm, and butterbur (Ze 185) significantly attenuated self-reported anxiety responses to acute stress compared to placebo (p=0.03) and no treatment (p=0.05) in 72 healthy men. Safety considerations are critical: CHM has been associated with 67% fewer adverse events than standard anxiolytics, but supplement quality varies widely, and consultation with a healthcare provider is essential before use.
